Affiliate Marketing Advice: Finding the Right Sponsor

If you are new to internet marketing, and you are looking for an online business that you can start at home, you will find many advertisements and promotions telling you that their affiliate program is the best.

So how do you choose from all these programs? Which one is going to work for you?

Actually, this probably not the question you should be asking.

In fact, I would suggest you ask two questions.

The first is, “Which program will I feel motivated to work hard for?”

The second is, “How hard will my affiliate sponsor work for me?”

You see, it’s not about whether the program is a good one or a bad one. What makes a program work for you is a question of how hard you are prepared to work for it. And if you are new to this business, you will need a good sponsor to show you what you need to do.

When you sign up for an affiliate marketing company, or mlm, you will be signed up under someone else who is a member of the program. This might be the person who set up the advert, or you might be assigned a sponsor if you joined at the site directly.

This is where you need to be careful. There are a lot of sponsors out there who do very little to help their affiliates. Why this should be is a bit of a mystery. After all, by helping their own affiliates to be successful, they make more money for themselves. That’s what this business is all about. Any sponsor who does not communicate with their downline has either misunderstood this essential point or does not really give a damn.

If you are new to this industry, it can be very frustrating to have a sponsor who does not contact you, even when you email them. It can leave you feeling lost and discouraged.

So, how do you find a good affiliate sponsor?

You need to do a bit of research. Forget the adverts and affiliate home pages. Most serious internet marketers will have their own website. You need to look at these and find someone who you can feel a rapport with. They will usually have a newsletter that you can subscribe to for free. Sign up for this first and read the newsletter. Is it friendly, personal and does it have integrity?

You can find affiliate websites on social bookmarking and networking sites.

A good website will have a photograph of the owner, personal content (not just advertising copy that they’ve taken from the affiliate programs), pages with advice and reviews, and a blog and should make the reader feel that they have choice.

When you are on a website like this, you should ask yourself how it makes you feel. Do you feel that the webmaster is talking to you personally, or does he seem absent? Do his/her words give you a feeling of trust? Do they tell you anything about themselves? Can you contact them? Have a look at mine below for an example.

If you feel that this person is someone you would like to do business with, then you can then choose to join one of their programs. If they have free ones to offer, you might like to start here first, and then test out what they are like as a sponsor without it costing you money. If you don’t like them, you can then cancel your membership and go elsewhere. If, on the other hand, they seem to be helpful and willing to answer your questions, then you might want to upgrade your free program or join a fee-paying one, knowing that your sponsor will be there for you.

This is my personal affiliate marketing advice for anyone thinking of joining an online business.

Even if your conversion rate increases by 20%, which is modest in my estimation, would be great, wouldn't you think? And if your customers have questions about the product, or those who have purchased them came to you with problems, you are in a better position to answer to them correctly because you have been there. Your answers will be more trustworthy and congruent.

You can help your readers by explaining to them the downside of the product and how to overcome the problems. They will be able to know if you have used the products yourself in your response and answers. This will create trust between you and your reader which will eventually end up in sales or recommendations or even future sales with a new product. What is basically happening is that you are building a trustworthy relationship with them which will only benefit you in the long run.

Acme People Search, hmmm, this is a very interesting affiliate program indeed.  Firstly the system they have in place can actually make you real money.  Yes, that’s right, real money.  The catch - there actually isn’t one.

How it works is that Acme People Search offer you the opportunity to own a search engine on its own webpage for the free.  Now I wasn’t aware of this statistic but 30% of all searches on Google, Yahoo and MSN are people related. 

You can imagine the possibilities of owning such a webpage.  It doesn’t stop there either, Acme have also teamed up with some of the biggest names in the business - Clickbank, Net Detective and Reunion.  This means that whenever somebody uses your search engine and gets a result, they will be directed to one of those companies to purchase software to take their search further.  If indeed they made a purchase you could earn up to 75% commission as you would have already signed up with these companies for free in the first step of this process.  Your People Search Engine will be advertised for you, I’ll explain more about that later.

As well as your search engine URL, you are provided with other URL’s which are used to refer other people into the Acme People Search program. These referral links will contain your personal ID number so that you are recognised as the person making the referral.  This would earn you up to $30 for each referral you made.  Most, if not all of the advertising for your links can be done using free methods.  My best results of generating free traffic have been with broadcasting websites, ad boards, forums, safe lists, traffic exchanges & blogs.  You can use Pay Per Click with Google, Yahoo, MSN, Bidvertiser etc.  Most PPC companies offer a number of clicks for free to new sign ups, so it would be a good idea to take advantage of this and gain some valuable experience along the way.

 This is actually covered in step two, where you are offered a free domain name and a 7 day trial of web hosting from a company called GDI.  Here you get to choose your own domain name for your people search engine, i.e. (“www.addressfinder.ws.”).  The reason I put “dot ws” and not “dot com” in my domain name example is that GDI own the “dot ws” extension, and therefore you get it for free. You can use a “dot com” extension but you will have to pay $10 for the privilege, but for the purposes of your domain name a “dot ws” extension is fine.  When you sign up, you also become an affiliate of GDI where you have the opportunity to earn $100 for every five referrals that convert to sign-ups within a 7 day period.  Any referrals you make will be known as your down-line and for every sign-up anyone in your down-line makes, 5 levels deep, will also be in your down-line. 

Why am I telling you this?  Because you would earn $1 for every person in your down-line who stays signed up to GDI on a monthly basis.  Some affiliates have 5 thousand people in their down-line, that’s $5,000 paid monthly to you for doing nothing.

I know that this all probably seems quite complicated, but Acme gently guides you through each step as you go along. You will also have a sponsor (somebody already successful using this system) who you can contact for any advice which is really helpful.

Now to the third and final step which is actually quite unique because just for completing this step, the Acme People Search founder (Tissa Godavitarne) will credit your Acme account with $125. As specified the money will go into you Acme account but will not be paid to your PayPal account until you have reached $200 in commission.  Therefore you would only need another $75 to get paid.

Also for completing this step, your people search engine will be advertised free of charge in Google, Yahoo and MSN for one month.  After this period, you will be guaranteed up to one hundred visitors to your search engine for $29 a month.  This can be set up using a PayPal account but you do have the option to cancel before the end of your month’s free advertising if you wish.  Therefore, no payments are made and you get to keep the $125 bonus paid in your Acme account.   

You can also earn extra money on your search engine website (only if you sign up with GDI) by signing up to Google Adsense, again this is all explained by Acme.

There are many ways to make money on the internet. It all depends on how much you want to make. If you are like me, making money on the internet started out for me as a curiosity rather than a need. I knew of people or at least heard of people making tons of money on the internet. I was initially very skeptical and decided to investigate the topic a little more.

What did I find out? Yes, you can make money. And yes, there are people who make tons of it and make a full time living out of it. It is not a fad. It is not a gimmick. It is a real business and you can make a decent living out of it. Will this business wither away to oblivion? In my opinion, it will not, and it is going to stay with us all the way. In fact, it is going to drastically change the way we work! But, I am digressing from the topic, so let me get back to it.

So, how can you make some money – quick easy money - without much investment or even zero investment. Let me tell you how to make money from the internet with zero money down, but I have to warn you that it will take some effort from your part. There are a number of ways. Here is one I have used and tested.

Use a blog. You can register a free account in a number of free blog sites. I particularly like blogger.com. Before you register a blog name, you need to do a bit for research on the topic you want to write. The topic can make a major difference in your income but this is another topic. Now that you have a blog, you can write your blog post.  Make sure your blog contents are of value and interesting to the reader.

In the blog, you can add in Google Adsense. Now this is the easiest way to monetize your blog. When visitors come to your blog site, they may click on the advertisement placed by Google and you then make some money.

Next, to make even more money is to promote other people’s products related to your blog content. You can do this by signing up with Clickbank. There are others commission junction and paydotcom. Once you have selected your products to sell, signup as affiliates and promote them on your blog. Again, if people buy the product, you earn a commission.

The final step is to drive traffic to your blog. The easiest way is to write articles frequently and submit them to article directories like ezinearticles. I must say consistency is the key to making money on the internet.

All the methods I have mentioned are all free and the best thing is, they are the easiest way to earn money on internet without spending any money! This method may not earn you enough to quit your job, but will definitely provide you with an ‘idea’ on how the internet works. It also helps you make some money as well!
